Craft Fair at Hernders Estate Wines - 4 November 2011

We went off to check out the annual Craft Fair at Hernders Estate Wines. It is taking place Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm.

I was heartened to see that many of the crafts are made by local craftspeople and to my relief, it wasn't at all like a flea market.

We took a few some video of the displayed, wares and interviewed some of the craftspeople. It was obvious that most of them really enjoyed making their crafts.

Port Colborne Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival - 30 July 2011

Port Colborne's Canal Days are one of my favourite yearly events. This year the weather is spectacular and there are smiles all around.

  As can be seen from the videos, Port Colborne was the place to be today. It is a beautiful city, come for a visit, you may stay.

The Annual St. Catharines' Car Show - 9 July 2011

St. Paul St. East in St. Catharines was crowded with vintage cars and people today. Today was the annual Car Show in St. Catharines and there certainly were a large number of cars, with their proud owners keeping an eye on their treasures.

There were Many models of: Chevrolet, Ford, Hot Rods, street drag racers, Chrysler, Jaguar, Lotus, Thunderbird, Corvettes of many vintages, Dodge, DeSoto, Rambler, Studebaker and many others.

The People and performers were as enjoyable to watch as the cars. On such a nice day as this, the people were out in large numbers and all had a smile on their faces. Interestingly, this was another very affordable event in Niagara's largest city, the cost was $0.00.

This event gets bigger every year. So mark it in your calendar for July 2012. You will enjoy yourself.

More Exhibits and Demonstrations - at NAPA - 1 July 2011

As mentioned in the previous article, we were at the Niagara Antique Power Association Show and had a great time. The show had every kind of antique power generator imaginable from small diesels and toy steam engines to large steam engines and steam tractors.

Here is a very nice 1916 Waterloo Steam Traction Engine. What a beautifully maintained engine and the engineer / fireman was very willing to share his knowledge with the curious public.

There was a nice collection of models and of course, the wonderful Meccano display. This extensive display has pieces that go right back to the beginning of Meccano. A very nice display - I hope that they will be back for next years show.

There was so much to see from stationary steam engines, drag saws, garden equipment, military organs. I will let the videos speak for themselves.

I recommend that folks go and enjoy the NAPA show. The show runs from Friday 1st of July to Sunday the 3rd.

The demonstrations and exhibitions are of interest to young and old alike. It is very affordable and the food is wonderful too. Remember to wear a hat and sunglasses and don't forget the sunscreen.

The Denney Improved Hot Air Engine - a Stirling Engine - 1 July 2011

We were at the Niagara Antique Power Association Show and had a great time. The show had every kind of antique power generator imaginable from small diesels and toy steam engines to large steam engines and steam tractors.

We will be putting up video of some of those attractions but to me the star of the show is the Denney Improved Hot Air Engine. This type of engine is called a Stirling Engine and it is a rare thing indeed to see a full sized one operating.

A visit to the Niagara on the Lake Strawberry Social - 18 June 2011

It was a beautiful day on the grounds of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Niagara on the Lake. Neighbours were talking to neighbours, children were laughing and everyone was having a wonderful time.

The smell of fresh strawberries, strawberry jam, fresh crepes with strawberries & cream, and clover was everywhere. The event was a treat to the senses. The church includes an old cemetery and I thought the people layed to rest there would have been happy to see how the grounds were enjoyed.

                 

You may think everything in Niagara-on-the-Lake is expensive - but you would be wrong. This strawberry social was for everyone, and although it was a church fund-raising event the prices were reasonable and the booths were popular.

Yummm....and service with a smile.....happy customers!

    

They were making strawberry jam right there - you could buy home-made jam or fresh strawberries. There were also burgers, dogs and corn-on-the-cob which, the cute little fellow below seems to be enjoying.

This Strawberry Social was organized by the community and not by a commercial organization and the results show it. It was a marvelous gathering of folks who were there to share their community. I had a really good time and I strongly recommend that you attend next year's event if you can. You will have a great time.

Unfortunately, not everything billed as a strawberry festival is actually like this - for something entirely different and not so nice see the post on the Beamsville one.
